Parents challenged to decipher alien scripts.

Parents of children in Treffos Nursery and early years were challenged to read simple story books written in an alien script. Just like a child picking up their first book! Later they enacted Letterland stories in order to see how phonics are taught. This was all part of an interactive workshop for parents to enable them to support their child's reading development really effectively.

It was a very nice evening. Every time I go to one of these events it makes me realise how pleased I am that my son goes to Treffos. I think the staff are delightful and it gives me such joy to watch all the children run into school each morning.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The PTA Macmillan Coffee Morning has become an annual feature during the Treffos Autumn Term.

Between 8.45 and 9.30am PTA members and the School Council served coffee and a variety of delicious cakes, many of them made at home the night before by parents and pupils. Then off to work for most parents but not before listening to a lively set of Harvest songs from the children in the school hall.

£156 was raised for this worthy charity.

Goodbye and farewell to our talented Year 6 pupils :Alex, Callum, Conor, Emma, Emily, Huw, Jodie, Margaret, Olivia and Xander. We look forward to hearing from them as they move to secondary school. Sadly, we are also saying farewell to parents who have been with us for many years and who have given the school a remarkable degree of support. These include Alison, Oliver, Chris, Kate, Gina, Steve, Vanessa, Grant, Charmaine, Mike, Mitch and Katie.

Joyce and I were delighted to be presented with a copy of the Treffos Year of Memories produced by Charmaine - which captures the life of the school over a period of one year in photographs. We also received an amazing tapestry with panels by each of the Uppers pupils illustrating different aspects of school life, meticulously crafted together by Alison-wonderful mementos of a very special year group and equally talented parents! Thank you.

Farewell to Mrs Dale

At the end of the Leavers' Ceremony we said farewell to Mrs Dale. It's not a final goodbye, of course, but it brings to a close a period of eighteen years in which Sian has given unstinting support to all the pupils who have passed through her class. Sian mainly taught the Juniors, where all her pupils developed a firsthand sense of history through well planned visits and sumptuous feasts- always in the costume of the period. Her flair for producing stimulating art lessons came from her father who was an art teacher, and she has helped many pupils to recognise their creative and artistic potential. We are all going to miss her professionalism, commitment and bright positive presence in the school.Sian was presented with a painting by Ishbel McWirter and a beautiful book, A Year of Memories, compiled by Charmaine.

It is never easy to decide who should be given this award, particularly when we have such a talented group of leavers, however, this year there was a joint presentation to Jodie and Olivia. Both pupils gained top scholarships: Jodie at St Davids and Olivia at Rydal Penrhos. It is a remarkable achievement as both girls were entered at the very last minute, so were not coached for the scholarship exams.

Experiences of World War 2

It was back to 1939 for the Upper Juniors today as they performed a short drama showing what it was like for children at the start of World War 2: for some having to shelter from the bombs, for others being evacuated to the country leaving their families behind.

Luckily for us a time machine then sped us to 1945. We dug up our vegetables and used some of our sugar rations and made a great lunch to celebrate Victory in Europe.

The Uppers had an interactive lesson on the nature of light and colour and how a camera works. While working in pairs, they discussed what Treffos has meant to them over the past few years and then went out to photograph aspects of those memories. They then selected 25 of their favourites and made a "deconstructed environment" reflecting their time at Treffos.

The 500 photographs that were taken on that afternoon were then used as tiles in a mosaic showing the whole class of 2011 on the lawn in front of the school house. This is best viewed from a distance first and then zoom in to see the individual tiles. The mosaic was created with AndreaMosaic.

This term the Uppers have spent time updating their knowledge and understanding of new media by creating an Uppers blog. All the Uppers are very proactive at regularly checking the school blog but have passed comment of wishing they had their own. As a result Mrs Dale and Mrs Wyatt suggested that Miss Boden work with the Uppers to apply her skills from her Journalism and Media Degree to teach the Uppers how to create a blog and create a post.

The Uppers were keen to undertake the challenge and began by watching a short clip explaining how to create your blog account. The children then discussed the stages of creating and personalising a blog account and recorded their findings in stages as a set of instructions. In conjunction with their ICT lessons the children were writing a 150 word report on their favourite camp experience. The Uppers clearly understood the difference between a website and a blog in that a website is formal and a blog can be informal. So once the camp reports were typed up the children ‘customised’ them so that key words would ‘jump off the page.’

The children really enjoyed creating their Uppers blog account and posting their camp reports onto it and it is something that will now be maintained by pupils coming up to year 6 next year!

Uppers visit the World Museum in Liverpool

We had fun exploring The World Museum, Liverpool last Friday.

We visited the planetarium in the morning and the children were amazed at the images they saw.

We explored some of the other exhibits before lunch: dinosaur bones, fossils and real Egyptian Mummies! After lunch the children enjoyed a workshop about shadow puppets. We were shown some fantastic puppets and then set about making our own to bring back to school.

Before setting off we squeezed in a visit to the aquarium, there were some fantastic fish and to our surprise we also found tanks depicting life in the sea around Anglesey. The children were fascinated to see what is in the sea right on our doorstep.

It was a very enjoyable day and a great new venue to add to our programme of visits.

The Sealed Knot visits Treffos

Gareth and Helen Foulkes, members of the educational charity The Sealed Knot which encourages an interest in our heritage through performing re-enactments, visited pupils at Treffos School to bring to life their study of the Tudor Period.

Gareth and Helen were in costume and brought a fascinating collection of clothing and artifacts. Pupils learnt why soldiers carried a third shoe, how they waterproofed their kit bags with linseed oil and how leather jugs were waterproofed with tar or wax. They learnt how the terrifying weapon, the pike, (long handed spear) was deployed and they were given a chance to bear arms themselves. They were amazed to discover that it was only the wealthy that had a bath and then only once or two each year!

Charlotte Thomas owner of The Celtic Kitchen talked to the Uppers about her business making and selling preserves at local Farmer's Markets. They asked her advice in preparation for March 1st when they will hold their own "Treffos Market", selling local produce.

To celebrate St David's Day the children will have the opportunity to use the Welsh language phrases they have been learning around the topic of "Food " at their own market.

They will be selling seasonal vegetables from Hootons, jams from The Celtic Kitchen, daffodils,sandwiches, Welsh Rarebit tea and cakes.

History is fun!

The Upper Juniors have been learning about The Tudors this term. To help us remember some interesting facts about King Henry and all his wives we produced a short musical with some great songs and put on a performance in assembly.

As you can see from our ‘Living Portrait Gallery’ we had some lovely Queens, a handsome King and even a few sailors who were all introduced to us by two very helpful courtiers.

Well known local artist Peter Wynstanley opened the pupils' exhibition. He told the pupils how his passion for art had been ignited by one teacher in his prep school as a very young boy. He enthused about how learning to enjoy painting in school would provide great pleasure for a lifetime. And he stressed how important it was for teachers to see artistic work as not the expression of talent but a skill which has to be taught. Not surprisingly every picture had a red dot on it by the end of the exhibition and the event raised over £300 for Children in need.

Every 2 years all the children in the school produce a self-portrait. It is great to see the portraits develop as the children move up the school. They experiment with different mediums, look at different artists work and sometimes try to produce portraits in the style of that artist.

This year we displayed all the work in the hall and it was lovely to see the portraits of every child: from the Kindergarten to the Uppers.

The children were very proud of their work and enjoyed showing their parents around the exhibition.

We held the exhibition on Children in Need Day and for a donation parents could ‘buy’ their child’s portrait. The children loved seeing red sold stickers on their work!

The Uppers have been investigating The Mountain Environment so on Tuesday we took advantage of this fantastic resource right on our doorstep!

The children had discussed the risks of walking in the mountains and the importance of being well prepared to ensure a good day and arrived in the morning all packed and ready to go off to our outdoor classroom.

The children were looking for geological evidence to explain the landscape and there was great excitement when they recognised a U-shaped valley and began to imagine what it must have been like when the area was filled with ice. Pictures and diagrams are no substitute for the real thing.

But just as important we had fun walking, climbing and enjoying a fantastic day out in the mountains.

Thanks to the all the parents who came with us: for helping to prepare the children for the trip, sharing their expertise on the day and for taking some fantastic photographs.

The PTA Macmillan Coffee Morning has become an annual feature during the Treffos Autumn Term.

As always parents resisted temptation and were quite restrained in their sugar intake and so a cake stall set up in the school playground ensured the rest were fully appreciated- and of course Barney, Bess and Rosie Buttons hoovered up the crumbs. Year 6 organised lots games for the younger children in the playground. Good fun for all which raised £155 for the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning.

Bess and Barney,the school spaniels, have now been joined by Rosie Buttons . Bess is the mother of Barney and the boss, but Rosie is challenging her for the position of top dog. They all have great qualities-they always give you a welcome, are always ready to play, never sulk or hold a grudge if told off, do as they are told ( not Rosie!) and are very photogenic. It’s becoming a well known fact that dogs are a great addition in a primary school- Bess,Barney and Rosie are for everyone at Treffos.

Year 6 School Council BBQ

Hot Dogs with lashings of ketchup and spuds heated on the BBQ with plenty of butter, salt and cheese may not get top marks for healthy eating, but the School Council, who planned and prepared the BBQ in the woods for the whole school, got a big thank you from the younger pupils.

None of the food was wasted as Barney, Bess and Rosy Buttons, the school dogs, hoovered up any hot dogs that hit the woodland floor.

"All the school eating in the woodland, round a camp fire with pupils helping on the BBQ and dogs free to join in may present a few risks but each can be worked round in order to provide opportunities for pupils to plan together, work as a team, serve other pupils, and act as good role models."

Here's what the children had to say:

We set up a school BBQ in the woods. We took tables and crates to sit on and lots of wood for the fire. We cooked hot dogs and potatoes then afterwards we all joined in The Bear Hunt story followed by the parachute game and cakes we had made.

On the 9th September 2010 we had a barbeque in the woods. But the Uppers had a lot of preparation to do the day before; we had to clear the area of the woods we were going to use. Everyone had different jobs, some of us had to collect fire wood for the big fire, the parents had to prepare the hotdogs, a few of us scrubbed the potatoes so they were nice and clean, others had to collect some crates to arrange a circle of crates for all of the school to sit on. Dr Humphreys, our headmaster, set up the barbeque so that it was a safe distance from the younger pupils. The day arrived as a normal school day but at half eleven The School Council were asked to take the food, drinks, cups and plates up to the woods so that the barbeque could start, first came the kinders, then the infants and at last the juniors. We all had a great time.

Year 6 Awards

The Richard Simpson Challenge Cup was awarded jointly to Alysia and Nick for enhancing the musical life of the school.

Nick has a tremendous sense of rhythm on the guitar and a great singing

voice and his progress over the last few years has been great to watch.

Alysia has been an inspiration for the school’s younger recorder and

ocarina players with her flute playing and a lovely addition to the

musical life of the school with her solos on the harp.

Well done!
